  1. His family initially started calling him Beto to distinguish him from his grandfather with whom he shared his name.
  2. His father passed away in July 2001 at the age of 58 after his bicycle was hit by a car from behind.
  3. During his junior year at Columbia University, he served as a co-captain of the university’s heavyweight rowing crew.
  4. In 1995, he was arrested on burglary charges by University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) police after he had jumped the fence of the university property. However, the UTEP police later declined to press charges.
  5. In September 1998, he was arrested by the authorities in Anthony, Texas after he was found driving while intoxicated. After he completed the court-recommended DWI program, the charges against him were dropped. It later emerged that he had lost control of his car and had hit a truck. He had also tried to flee from the scene but was stopped from doing so. During his campaign to get elected to the US Senate, he initially denied fleeing from the scene but later apologized.
  6. As a teenager, he aspired to pursue a career in the music industry. In his freshman year at Columbia University, he even formed a punk band called Foss, which focused on punk music.
  7. Just after graduating from college, he started working as a live-in nanny for a family in Manhattan. He also worked as an art mover at Hedley’s Humpers.
  8. While living in New York City, he got interested in the publishing industry and started working as a proofreader at H. W. Wilson Company in the Bronx. During this phase, he wrote music and short stories in his free time.
  9. After returning to El Paso, he became the co-founder of an internet services and software company called Stanton Street Technology. The company is run by his wife and focuses on developing websites and software.
  10. He was inspired to enter politics by the successful mayoral run of Ray Caballero, who had asserted in his campaign that El Paso was great and the city should expect greatness out of itself. After Caballero failed to get re-elected, O’Rourke decided to enter public service.
  11. He had initially decided to run for the post of county judge but was persuaded by his friends to run for the city council. He decided to make border reform and downtown development his platform for the election.
  12. In 2005, he defeated two-term incumbent City Councilman Anthony Cobos by the margin of 14% to win the election. He was re-elected in 2007 as he managed to defeat Trini Acevedo by the margin of 40%.
  13. In 2012, he came up against the 8-term Silvestre Reyes in the Democratic primaries to represent Texas’s 16th congressional district. According to reports, he knocked on 16,000 doors for his campaign and contrasted his stand against Reyes with his LGBT rights support and drug liberalization plans.
  14. In the general election against Republican challenger Barbara Carrasco, he managed to win the election by winning 65% votes.
  15. In November 2014, he was one of the few Democratic congressmen to criticize Obama’s decision to protect 5 million undocumented immigrants from deportation via an executive order. O’Rourke praised Obama’s motives but criticized his decision to bypass Congress.
