Brenda Fricker is an Irish actress who has appeared in many films and TV series since the start of her career in 1964, but was best known for being the 1st Irish actress that won an Oscar at the Academy Awards event on March 26, 1990, in the category of “Best Supporting Actress”, for playing Mrs. Brown in My Left Foot (1989), a mother who had to take care of a son with cerebral palsy. After the success of the movie, she ventured out to Hollywood as well as theatre, starring in prominent plays at the Royal Shakespeare Company, Irish National Theatre, and Court Theatre Company in the United Kingdom.

Brenda also had notable roles in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992) alongside Macaulay Culkin, and then as May Mackenzie in So I Married an Axe Murderer in 1993, Maggie Nelson in Disney’s 1994 film Angels in the Outfield with Matthew McConaughey and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, followed by A Time to Kill, a crime drama film from 1996, starring Sandra Bullock, Samuel L. Jackson, Kevin Spacey, and Kiefer Sutherland. In 2014, Brenda announced she would retire from acting, but came back for 1 final episode of a drama TV series Forgive Me in 2015.

As soon as the divorce was finalized, in 1979, Brenda and Barry got married. They had no children even though Brenda was pregnant for a total of 6 times since all pregnancies, unfortunately, ended in miscarriage. In 1988 Brenda filed for divorce citing his heavy drinking and moody behavior, but the pair got back together in 1990 as Barry’s unhealthy habits improved. Unfortunately, he fell down the stairs in 1991, after which their relationship subsequently ended. In an interview in 2010, she said that if she could marry him again, she would, because he was the love of her life.

  1. She had numerous health problems throughout her life – she was in a car accident as a teenager, which took her 2 years to recover from, had her kidney removed, suffered a case of Tuberculosis, and became a diabetic at one point of her life.
  2. Brenda strived to become a journalist and was an assistant for the art editor working in Irish Times magazine.
  3. Brenda became an actress by chance. She simply had to find a job as she needed money and is one of a few actresses that won an Oscar Award because they acted out of labor.
  4. She starred in a well-known Irish TV series Casualty as Megan Roach for 72 episodes in a span of 24 years, from 1986 to 2010. Her co-stars were actors Suzanne Packer, Derek Thompson, Ian Bleasdale, and Tony Marshall.
  5. Brenda starred alongside Albert Finney and Michael Gambon in A Man of No Importance (1994), which was greatly praised for its LGBT community representation, along with Cloudburst (2011), where Brenda played Olympia Dukakis’ gay partner.
