  2. Tony Kusian – Crystal was dating a guy named Tony Kusian while she was competing on American Idol season 9 in 2010. Everything seemed to be fine between the couple until Tony decided to break up with her on the first day of the finale week. In an interview with TV show host and radio personality Ryan Seacrest, Crystal stated that Tony was finding it difficult to cope up with the celebrity kind of lifestyle that she had attained as he was from a small town and wanted to keep things low key.
  3. Brian L. Walker (2010-2013) – Crystal and musician Brian L. Walker met one another for the first time in 2005 at the Uncommon Ground Café situated in Chicago, where she would often do Open Mic’s. However, it wasn’t until 2010, that the two started seeing one another and finally got married October 10 that year. However, 3 years later, the couple had decided to part ways on May 6, 2013. Crystal released her debut studio album titled Farmer’s Daughter on December 14, 2010. The album was a huge success and more than 200,000 copies were sold all through the United States.   1. She was brought up alongside her twin brother Karl in Elliston, Ohio.
  2. Crystal was 2 years old when her parents Kelly and William legally parted ways from one another.
  3. Doctors had diagnosed her with “Type 1 Diabetes” when she was just 6 years old. However, this never stopped her from following her passion for music. She also pledged her dedication to spreading a helping hand to those who suffered from it at the end of the reality show American Idol season 9.
  4. She was part of her high school choir and also played the flute in her school’s marching band.
  5. Crytal was 10 years old when she played professionally in front of an audience at a local bar. She would frequently play at Papa’s Tavern, and The Village Idiot in Maumee, Ohio.
  6. In an effort to up her game, she relocated to Chicago at the age of 17. She started off there as a street performer, often playing at train stations and at the Lake View area.
  7. She performed at various live shows at Uncommon Ground‘s Devon and Clark and Grace locations.
  8. After moving to Chicago, her health insurance had expired forcing her to beg for money so that she could buy her insulin from the pharmacy.

  11. In February 2010, Crystal had auditioned at American Idol with singing the song Piece of My Heart (1967) by gospel singer Erma Franklin. Her piece was praised by guest judge and legendary singer Shania Twain as “raw, natural talent”.
  12. Singer and songwriter Siobhan Magnus was the last female contestant to be the eliminated leaving only Crystal to battle it out in the finale. Despite having attained 1st runner-up, she retained the title as the first female contestant to make it to the final round.
  13. Her original song Holy Toledo was played in the background on the show of her homecoming video. This is also made her the person to have their original song played on the show as part of their video.
  14. Crystal had signed to her first record label 19 Entertainment and Jive Records on May 27, 2010. This was just one day after the finale had ended. On May 28, 2010, Crystal’s debut single Up to the Mountain was released. Originally the song was released by legendary singer and songwriter Patty Griffin in 2006. Crystal’s version of the song peaked at #57 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart that year.
  15. In 2011, Crystal was left without a record label after RCA Music Group had disbanded Jive Records along with many other labels. Later, she signed to Shanachie Records in October 2012.
