Françoise Abanda Facts

  1. She began her tennis journey at the age of 7 after getting inspired by watching her older sister play the sport. She began training in earnest and in 2009, she became a member of Tennis Canada‘s National Training Centre in her hometown of Montréal.
  2. In June 2012, she reached the semifinals of the junior Wimbledon Championships in both the singles and the doubles formats.
  3. When she won the G1 tournament in Repentigny, Canada in September 2012, she became only the 2nd player from the state of Quebec to win that title, after Eugenie Bouchard had done so in 2011.
  4. Her first win against a ‘Top 100’ ranked player came in April 2015 at the Fed Cup World Group Play-offs where she upset the then World No. 33 Irina-Camelia Begu.
  5. In April 2017, at the Fed Cup World Group II Play-offs, she won both her singles matches, against players ranked 51 and 31 in the world at that time. Her efforts helped Canada win the tie 3–2 and reach the World Group II for the 2018 season of the tournament.
  6. In August 2017, at the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier 5 Western & Southern Open, she defeated 3 players ranked in the ‘Top 100’ in successive matches.
