Harmanpreet Kaur’s Facts

  1. In her formative days, Harmanpreet used to play in men’s and boys’ teams as there were no organized female teams in her hometown and used to train at the Guru Nanak Dev College ground in her neighborhood.
  2. Her first taste of captaincy at the international level came abruptly and in a critical match. She was named captain for the final match of the 2012 Women’s Twenty20 Asia Cup, as regular captain Mithali Raj and vice-captain Jhulan Goswami were ruled out due to injuries. Harmanpreet led the team to victory over arch-rivals Pakistan as the team managed to defend a paltry total of 81 runs to win the title for the 5th time.
  3. She moved to Mumbai in 2014, 5 years after making her India debut, to gain regular access to better training and practice facilities. She was employed there by the Indian Railways.
  4. As Test Match cricket is rarely played in the women’s game, she has represented India in just 2 test matches as of January 2020. She took 9 wickets in the 2nd of those games that helped India post an emphatic victory over South Africa.
  5. In June 2016, she became the first Indian, male or female, to be contacted by an overseas T20 franchise when she was signed up by WBBL (Women’s Big Bash League) team Sydney Thunder.
  6. Harmanpreet was honored with the Arjuna Award in 2017, an annual honor accorded by the Government of India that recognizes outstanding achievement in sports.
  7. Her momentous innings of 171 not out against Australia in the semi-final of the 2017 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, was the 2nd highest at that time by an Indian female cricketer in ODIs, the highest by an Indian woman in World Cup history, as well as the highest ever in a knockout-stage match of a Women’s Cricket World Cup.
  8. In December 2017, she was named in the ‘ICC Women’s T20I Team of the Year’.
  9. In November 2018, she became the first Indian cricketer to score a hundred in a Women’s T20I match.
  10. In March 2021, she was tested positive for coronavirus.
  11. In February 2023, Harmanpreet Kaur was sold to Mumbai Indians for INR 1.8 crore in the first-ever Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction held in Mumbai. Their team Mumbai Indians won the inaugural WPL title, i.e. WPL 2023 title.
  12. She won ₹5 lakhs for the ‘Catch of the Season’ award in WPL 2023 which was in match #15 against UP Warriorz.
  13. In 2023, Kaur created history by becoming the first Indian woman cricketer to be included in the Wisden Cricketers of the Year list.
  14. In July 2023, Harmanpreet was banned for 2 international matches and was fined 75% of her match fee after she had breached the ‘ICC Code of Conduct’ by smashing stumps with her bat after her dismissal and by mocking and criticizing umpires during the 3rd ODI match against Bangladesh.
