Joanna Gaines Facts

  1. Her earliest ambition in childhood was to get cast in TV commercials. From the age of 6 to 8, she would often read from the back of a cereal box or a shampoo bottle aloud pretending like she was a model promoting the product.
  2. Joanna’s first job was tending to an aisle of food at an all-you-can-eat buffet restaurant.
  3. By the time she entered high school, she was deemed as the most practical of all her siblings and she often assisted her father at his workplace. She was seriously planning to takeover the Firestone franchise until she developed an interest in broadcast journalism.
  4. Joanna has no formal education in interior designing and learned everything about it with practice and research.
  5. She manifested her life-long wish of working with her father by persuading him to take over the Magnolia Market retail business after he sold his Firestone franchise.
  6. After closing her retail shop in 2005, Joanna continued to assist Chip in renovation projects. Alongside, she started her blog to write about design and became a contributing writer for Wacoan magazine. This led to an invitation to write about child-friendly home design for DesignMom.com in 2011. Her post further caught the attention of High Noon Productions who got in touch with Chip and Jo for a pilot episode featuring their construction business. It soon evolved into the highly successful Fixer Upper series.
  7. Chip and Jo’s first construction project after marriage was renovating their own house immediately after their honeymoon.
  8. Whenever her husband leaves home for an out-of-town trip, Joanna leaves a note for him in his overnight bag.
  9. Joanna often describes herself as shy, reserved, and a worrier who credits her husband’s risk-taking ability for manifesting her dreams into reality. Chip starts a business while Joanna has to jump in and take care of the details to eventually push the project past the finish line.
  10. One of Joanna’s biggest design disasters was when a 100-year-old house was painted school bus yellow because Joanna passed the color without testing the shade of the paint.
  11. Apart from being the co-author of The Magnolia Story (2016), Joanna has also released a cook book of her favorite recipes called Magnolia Table (2018) and a design book titled Homebody (2018).

  16. In December 2022, Joanna and Chip were sued by Vigliano Associates after it was reported that they backed out of paying a fee for their massive book deal.
