John Digweed Facts

  1. He began DJing when he was 15 years old. He made a name for himself by performing at rave parties at the Hastings Pier in Hastings, East Sussex, England.
  2. His brother, George Digweed, is a multi-World and European clay-shooting champion. For his sport achievements, he was awarded the British Order of Chivalry – The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE).
  3. In 1993, he sent a demo of a mixtape he made to Geoff Oakes, the owner of a nightclub named Renaissance, located in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England.
  4. Geoff played the demo to DJ Sasha, whose real name is Alexander Coe, at his nightclub. That was when John and Sasha met, and where their friendship and eventual partnership in the form of a DJ duo began.
  5. Before Sasha and John released their debut mixtape Renaissance: The Mix Collection in 1994 for the Renaissance nightclub, DJ mixtapes were commonly only released on an amateur basis, without any planning about marketing, artwork, or profits.
  6. To promote their music, he and Nick Muir, another well-known DJ, began performing together as a duo under the name Bedrock. Their big break came when the track For What You Dream Of, first released in 1993, found its way in the soundtrack for the movie Trainspotting (1996).
  7. John and Nick Muir started their own record label entitled Bedrock Records in 1999.
  8. John purchased his own nightclub in Southern England at one point so he could have security, stability, perform regularly, and on his own terms.
  9. He and DJ Sasha established themselves as regular performers in Twilo, a nightclub in New York City, New York, the United States in 1997.
  10. Even though the reception of their performance at Twilo wasn’t the best initially, by 2001, it became one of the best clubs in the city. Unfortunately, it ended up being raided by the police and forcibly closed down that year.
  11. Between September 2000 and January 2011, he hosted a regular 2-hour radio show on Kiss 100 radio in the United Kingdom. The 1st hour was reserved for him, while the 2nd was played by the guest DJ. The show’s name later became Transitions, which was also the name of 4 mixtapes John released between 2006 and 2008.
  12. In 1998, the well-known TV network VH1 named him “a part of the jet-setting deejay elite.”
  13. John said that he doesn’t like labeling his music, as it was very progressive, and “a mishmash” of different genres.
  14. He said that he loved performing in America and Australia because he loved warm countries that he could play until the morning, while the sun was rising up.
  15. The longest DJ set that he has performed was over 12 hours because the owners of the venue allowed him and the audience to stay for as long as it felt right.
  16. He created the soundtrack for the movie Stark Raving Mad in 2002, as well as the TV series Spider-Man (2003).
  17. His song Heaven Scent ended up in the movie Groove (2000), in which he also had a cameo as one of the DJs on the stage.
  18. John was named as the #1 DJ at the Top 100 rankings by DJ Magazine in 2001. He lost the spot in the next few years, and only managed to come back at the 3rd place in 2007, before slowly descending and disappearing from the list in 2013.
