Matthew Pavlich is an Australian businessman, sports presenter, correspondent, advisory board executive, and former professional rules footballer. He was best known for his 17-year football career entirely spent as part of the Fremantle Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL) that started in 2000. He is regarded as one of the best half-forwards and has achieved an All-Australian selection consecutively between 2002 and 2008. Throughout his career in the AFL, he was also the 6-time best and fairest winner, a club captain between 2007 and 2015, and an 8-time leading goalkicker.

  1. He played senior football for Woodville-West Torrens Eagles in SANFL, just like his dad and 2 of his uncles.
  2. Matthew was drafted by the Fremantle Football Club in 1999 with the 4th pick.
  3. He kicked his 500th career goal in Round 7 of the 2012 AFL season and his 600th career goal in the Round 9 match against the Geelong Cats in the 2014 AFL season.
  4. In 2014, he became the 1st player from a Western Australian football club to have played 300 AFL games.
  5. His last match before retirement was against the Western Bulldogs in August 2016. His team won by 20 points.
  6. Between 2000 and late 2016, when he retired, Matthew played in 353 AFL games, reached 700 career goals, and became the club’s most decorated player within 21 years of its existence.
  7. After he retired, he intentionally tried to put on a few pounds and didn’t exercise inside or outside of the gym for 6 months. When he finally did, he started gently trail running a 5K jog on the foreshore along the beach.
  8. For 3 years, he was the president of AFLPA (AFL Players Association) and had a seat on the Board of Directors for 9 years.
  9. He has co-founded Pickstar alongside James Begley, also a former AFL footballer, which is an online marketplace platform that connects fans, brands, and athletes.

  11. One of the people who taught him a lot about public behavior, sportsmanship, and business was Roger Federer. He taught him that he needs to “love the grind.”
