Pat Sajak is an American game show host who has cemented his place in the television history as one of the favorite hosts of the game show Wheels of Fortune. He began his career as a weatherman and had dabbled in other game show pilots before Wheels of Fortune came along. For decades, Pat and his co-host Vanna White have entertained audiences with their camaraderie on screen. He began hosting the show in 1981.

Pat Sajak Facts

  1. During the Vietnam War, Sajak joined the US military as a disc jockey for the American Forces Vietnam Network. He succeeded Adrian Cronauer as the host of the Dawn Buster radio show and for 14 months, he followed his tradition of singing “Good Morning Vietnam!”.
  2. He began his career as a weatherman at WSM-TV Nashville and went on to work at KNBC Los Angeles. The latter provided him with the exposure to land a spot on Wheel of Fortune.
  3. He is also an accomplished helicopter pilot.
  4. Sajak has a Sesame Street muppet named after him. Created in his likeness, Pat Playjacks is known as the nicest game show host on the show.
  5. He was credited as the co-composer of the thrash metal band, Slayer in the 2001 issue of the U.S. pop music magazine Spin.
  6. He is an avid fan of ice hockey.
  7. On June 19, 2011, Pat was awarded the Emmy Lifetime Achievement Award.
  8. He is famously known as the 2nd full-time host of Wheel of Fortune after Chuck Woolery.
  9. He was mentored by television host Merv Griffin.
  10. Pat has mentioned that if he weren’t hosting Wheel of Fortune, he would either be a DJ or a weatherman (which was his first job).

  14. During an interview, Pat revealed that he and co-host Vanna White used to get drunk before shooting the show. As they would have time to kill before the taping, the two would head to a nearby Mexican restaurant, Los Arcos, and would have, on an average 4 margaritas before heading back to the studio.
  15. In June 2023, Pat revealed that he had decided to retire as the host of Wheel of Fortune after 41 seasons.
