Best Known For

Her highly successful career as a model in the 1980s and 1990s throughout which she has graced the covers of prominent magazines like Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, Elle, Glamour, Cosmopolitan, Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, etc.

First Film

In 1984, Paulina made her theatrical film debut in the romantic-drama Covergirl.

First TV Show

Paulina made her first TV show appearance as a guest on the talk show Late Night with David Letterman in March 1984.

Personal Trainer

Although Paulina is genetically blessed and can rock a bikini even in her 50s, she led an unhealthy lifestyle in her youth owing to heavy smoking and poor nutrition.

It was only in her early 40s, that the supermodel began taking her fitness seriously. In the beginning, physical exercises proved beneficial in helping her deal with panic attacks as well as weaning her off antidepressants. Gradually, she began enjoying the health benefits and positive changes in her body.

Her workout routine includes doing different fitness exercises 5 to 6 days a week. Paulina alternates between pilates, kickboxing, karate, rowing, yoga, and spinning to avoid being in a workout rut. She also enjoys a variety of dance forms like Zumba, Bollywood dancing, belly dancing, and strip dancing and considers it a great way to get in shape.

Fortunately for her, Paulina doesn’t have to take extreme steps in the name of diet. A few rules that she adheres to are eating everything in moderation and ditching diet foods altogether. She has also divulged a simple trick to avoid overeating during meals which is to consume salads and veggies first so that there is limited room left for other calorie-rich foods.

Additionally, Paulina has stayed away from getting treatments like botox and fillers done on her face. Although she is not dead-set against it, she prefers using non-invasive treatments like laser facials, ultherapy, and acupuncture for her overall well-being. Also, she has been using sunscreen (for UVA and UVB rays) since the age of 27 and credits La Roche Posay Anthelios for delaying the signs of aging on her face.

Paulina Porizkova Facts

  1. When Paulina was 3 years old, her parents fled from war-torn Czechoslovakia (during the 1968 Warsaw Pact invasion) to Lund in Sweden in search of a better life. The toddler was left behind with her grandmother with plans to bring her back to Sweden later. However, the Communist regime refused to oblige and her parents subsequently got embroiled in a public battle to reclaim her. The case was highly publicized in the Swedish media at the time.
  2. Some years later, her mother Anna, who was pregnant with son Jáchym at the time, attempted to rescue her daughter by returning to Czechoslovakia. Unfortunately, she was detained and placed under house arrest by the national police. But, it was the efforts of Swedish politician Olof Palme, who led the international political pressure, that forced the national authorities to eventually concede. Paulina was allowed to return to Sweden and was reunited with her family after 7 years.
  3. Sadly, her parents got divorced soon after and her father married a Swede, breaking up the family for good. He also refused to pay for child support which left Anna to bring up both her kids on her own. As a result, Paulina cut all ties with her father from a young age.
  4. Paulina took part in an impromptu photo shoot at the age of 13 wherein she was dolled up by her school friend Christine, who was a budding makeup artist. Her friend sent the pictures to the Elite modeling agency hoping to be recognized for her make-up artist skills. But instead, Paulina’s face grabbed the attention of modeling agent John Casablancas who helped launch her modeling career.
  5. She appeared on the front cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue back to back in 1984 and 1985. Before her, only Christie Brinkley had featured on the magazine’s covers consecutively, in her case, for 3 years in 1979, 1980, and 1981.
  6. Paulina, seen primarily as a swimsuit model, made the shift to European sophisticate after landing a record-breaking deal with Estée Lauder in 1988. As a part of the lucrative 7-year contract, the highest-paying of its time, she received $6 million per year till 1995. She was succeeded by Elizabeth Hurley.
  7. She was enlisted by People Magazine as one of the ’50 Most Beautiful People in the World’ in 1990 and 1992.
  8. In March 2007, Paulina joined Dancing with the Stars with professional dancer Alec Mazo. Sadly, she was voted off in the first week of elimination rounds on the dance reality show.
  9. In May 2008, Paulina replaced British fashion icon Twiggy as the judge of the 10th season of America’s Next Top Model. However, her stint lasted only from cycles 10 to 12 as she was fired from the job on April 9, 2009, (her 44th birthday) for allegedly being too egocentric.
  10. Her op-ed piece titled “America Made Me a Feminist” was published in The New York Times on June 10, 2017.
  11. The alternative rock band, The Rentals, dedicated a song titled Friends of P to Porizkova on their debut album Return of the Rentals (1995).
  12. Similarly, she was the subject of No Doubt‘s single Paulina from their eponymous debut album in 1992.
  13. A Model Summer, her debut novel was released in 2007. The plot of the book revolves around a 15-year-old Swedish girl Jirina’s experience working in the Paris fashion industry.
  14. She contributed as a co-author on the children’s book, The Adventures of Ralphie the Roach along with fellow model Joanne Russell. The book, published in September 1992, was illustrated by her stepson Adam Ocasek.
  15. Paulina is a self-professed bibliophile. Her Instagram account contains many sultry pictures of her holding a book (for the monthly recommendation) along with the hashtag #PaulinasPicks.
  16. Apart from writing, her interests also include photography, doing oil paintings, and playing classical piano.
