For example, to get in the role of Max Cady in Cape Fear, he teamed up with his longtime personal trainer Dan Harvey and spent 6 months prior to the start of the shoot in the gym.

During that period, he was spending 6 days a week in the gym with each workout session stretching to two or three hours. His workout plan was divided into simple 3 days split (chest, back, and legs). Also, he kept 45 minutes aside at the end of the workout for a cardio session. He also included lots of bodyweight exercises in his workout regime.

  1. He went on to gain 60 pounds (27 kgs) of muscle mass to play the role of aging boxer Jake La Motta in the iconic movie, Raging Bull. It was the world record for most weight gained for a role at that time.
  2. While growing up, he was nicknamed Bobby Milk because of his very thin body and too-pale complexion.
  3. In 1989, he established his production company Tribeca Film Center, which has produced a number of successful movies including Meet the Parents, which had Ben Stiller and De Niro himself in the lead role.
