Sofia Kenin Facts

  1. She was born in Moscow and her family moved back to the United States when she was a toddler. The family had earlier lived in the erstwhile Soviet Union and had moved to New York City in 1987. However, they returned to Russia for Sofia’s birth so that family members there could help raise her in the first few months.
  2. She started playing tennis from the early age of 5 and was inspired by her father who used to play the sport recreationally. Her parents, realizing her talent, arranged for her to train under renowned coach Rick Macci in Florida. She trained under Rick till the age of 12.
  3. She performed consistently well at regional and age-group levels and reached the number one ranking in the USTA (United States Tennis Association) national rankings for each of the under-12, under-14, under-16, and under-18 divisions.
  4. Sofia represented the United States at the Junior Fed Cup and played a key part in the tournament as the team defeated Slovakia 3–0 in the final. She played 5 doubles matches in the tournament and was unbeaten throughout.
  5. In 2015, she triumphed at the USTA Girls 18s National Championship which earned her a wild card to the main draw of the 2015 US Open.
  6. 2019 was Sofia’s breakthrough year, the highlight of which was a 3rd round victory over the legendary Serena Williams in the year’s French Open.
  7. The same year, she defeated Ashleigh Barty and Naomi Osaka in successive weeks which made her the first player, since Lindsay Davenport in 2001, to defeat the then World No.1 rank holders in consecutive weeks.
