Mahipal Lomror Facts

  1. Mahipal had started his cricketing journey as a specialist batter but he had evolved into an all-rounder by the time he began appearing in representative age-group tournaments.
  2. Renowned cricket coach and former international cricketer Chandrakant Pandit had nicknamed him ‘Junior Chris Gayle’ because of his penchant for hard-hitting strokes.
  3. Aged just 16, he was the 2nd youngest member of the Indian squad at the 2016 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup. In India’s first group stage game of the tournament, he had scored 17 runs and picked 2 wickets in a 79-run win over Ireland.
  4. His star shone in India’s next match, against New Zealand. He first scored 45 runs off just 42 balls to help propel India to a challenging total of 258 runs. He then wreaked havoc with the ball, scalping 5 wickets for 47 runs in 7.3 overs to help India restrict New Zealand to just 138 runs, resulting in a massive victory margin of 120 runs. Despite his all-round heroics, he was overlooked for the ‘Player of the Match’ award, a decision that came as a surprise to many fans, commentators, and journalists.
  5. In the quarter-final of the tournament, against Namibia, he had smoked 41 runs off just 21 balls to help India amass a massive total of 349 runs that resulted in a humongous victory margin of 197 runs.
  6. His breakthrough in domestic cricket came in the 2017–18 season when he was the joint-leading wicket-taker for Rajasthan in the Ranji Trophy (India’s premier domestic first-class cricket competition), with 13 dismissals in 6 matches.
  7. The performance helped him get selected to the India Red squad for the 2019–20 edition of the Duleep Trophy (a domestic first-class cricket competition originally contested by teams representing geographical zones of India which since 2016–17 has been played by teams chosen by the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) selectors).
