Days of Our Lives veteran actors

Few shows reward loyalty like Days of Our Lives. The NBC-turned-Peacock sudser premiered in November 1965, and a handful of its cast members have been clocking in at the Salem set for 40, 50, even 55-plus years. That’s not a run. That’s a career spent entirely in one zip code.

Peter Reckell’s name spiking online in recent days is a reminder of how deep that loyalty goes — Bo Brady fans have been tracking the actor’s every move since 1983. And soap viewers don’t just want plot recaps. They want to know who’s still fit at 70, who beat what illness, how tall the guy actually is standing next to Deidre Hall.

Here are 10 Days of Our Lives veterans worth knowing, with the stats and health stories behind them.

1. Peter Reckell

Born May 7, 1955, in Elkhart, Indiana, Reckell debuted as Bo Brady in 1983 and kept coming back — 1990, 1995, 2012, a 2015 stint, and again in 2022. He stands about 5 ft 10 in and has held a lean, athletic frame in the 170-lb range for decades.

Reckell’s a committed plant-based eater and has been open about it for years, alongside a drumming habit and an outdoorsy life in Northern California. He married singer Kelly Moneymaker in 1998; their daughter Loden was born via surrogate in 2007.

2. Deidre Hall

Hall first played Dr. Marlena Evans in 1976. Born October 31, 1947, in Milwaukee, she’s an identical twin (sister Andrea Hall worked on the show too) and stands about 5 ft 7 in.

Hall went public in the early ’90s about years of infertility treatment and had both sons via gestational surrogacy — David in 1992 and Tully in 1995. She wrote about it in Deidre Hall’s Kitchen Closeup era interviews and became one of daytime’s most visible advocates for surrogacy.

3. Drake Hogestyn

Before John Black, Hogestyn was a legitimate athlete — a shortstop drafted into the New York Yankees organization who played minor league ball before a shoulder injury ended it. He brought that 6-ft athlete’s build to Salem in 1986 and stayed nearly 40 years.

Hogestyn died September 29, 2024 — his 71st birthday — after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He’d only announced the diagnosis weeks earlier.

4. Suzanne Rogers

Kristian Alfonso

A trained dancer who worked Broadway and Radio City before joining as Maggie Horton in 1973, Rogers was born July 9, 1943. She won the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in 1979.

In 1984 she was diagnosed with myasthenia gravis, an autoimmune neuromuscular disease that caused facial drooping and forced a leave of absence. Writers eventually worked it into Maggie’s story, and Rogers became a national spokesperson for the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation. Still slender at about 5 ft 4 in, she’s never left the show.

5. Bill Hayes

Hayes had a number one record before he ever played Doug Williams — “The Ballad of Davy Crockett” topped the Billboard chart in 1955. Born June 5, 1925, he joined Days in 1970 and was still taping into his late 90s, standing around 5 ft 10 in.

He died January 12, 2025, at 98. Longevity like that in front of a camera is close to unmatched in American television.

6. Susan Seaforth Hayes

Born July 11, 1943, she’s played Julie Olson Williams on and off since 1968 — the longest active tie to the show of anyone. She and Bill landed on the cover of Time in January 1976 as the faces of daytime drama. They married in 1974.

Petite at about 5 ft 4 in, she filmed a 2023 breast cancer storyline for Julie and finally took home a Daytime Emmy in 2024.

7. Kristian Alfonso

Alfonso was a competitive figure skater before acting — she won a junior gold medal and was training seriously until a sledding accident at 13 wrecked her leg and ended the sport. Born September 5, 1963, she’s around 5 ft 7 in and modeled for Hallmark and Vogue as a teen.

She played Hope Brady from 1983 until walking away in 2020 after 37 years, one of the longest female runs in the show’s history.

8. Stephen Nichols

Born February 19, 1951, Nichols introduced Steve “Patch” Johnson in 1985 and built one of daytime’s most-watched supercouples with Mary Beth Evans. He’s listed near 5 ft 11 in and has kept a wiry, lean build well into his 70s.

He detoured to General Hospital as Stefan Cassadine in the ’90s and The Young and the Restless in the 2000s, but Salem keeps pulling him back.

9. Mary Beth Evans

Evans, born August 7, 1961, debuted as Kayla Brady in 1986. She’s about 5 ft 6 in and credits a lot of her on-camera stamina to running and hiking around Los Angeles. She’s raised four kids while working daytime’s brutal 12-hour tape days.

Like Nichols, she’s bounced between General Hospital, As the World Turns and the web series The Bay — but Kayla’s the role fans demand.

10. James Reynolds

Born August 10, 1946, Reynolds joined as Abe Carver in 1981 and has logged more than four decades in Salem, including a stretch as the town’s mayor. He’s a tall, broad-shouldered presence at about 6 ft.

He won the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in 2018 at age 71 and co-founded Los Angeles’ Fremont Centre Theatre with his wife, Lissa Layng.

Soap fame doesn’t come with blockbuster paychecks or magazine covers — well, except that one Time cover. What it does come with is decades of steady work, real audience attachment, and performers who stay in shape and keep showing up into their 70s, 80s and even late 90s. That’s a résumé most prime-time actors will never touch.
