Akram Afif is a Qatari professional footballer who has played as a left winger for Qatar Stars League club Al Sadd as well as the Qatar national team. Considered to be one of the most promising players to emerge from Qatar, he won the Asian Footballer of the Year award in 2019.

Akram Afif Facts

  1. His football career started by playing in the youth teams of Al-Markhiya and Al Sadd. After that, he joined the Al Sadd Sports Club as a full-time student in 2009.
  2. In the 2013 Al Kass International Cup, Akram Afif went on to represent the Spanish professional football club Sevilla, netting a brace and earning an assist in the team’s first match which ended as a 3–0 victory against Aspire Academy.
  3. In 2014, he featured in Qatar U20’s AFC U-19 Championship qualification campaign. He scored the only goal in the tournament’s final against DPR Korea and secured Qatar’s victory.
  4. In September 2015, he was called up to the Qatari senior national team by coach Daniel Carreño. During the 2018 World Cup Qualification rounds, he scored in Qatar’s 15–0 win against Bhutan on September 3, 2015, as well as registered an assist in the match.
  5. Akram Afif was signed by Belgian club Eupen in January 2015.
  6. On January 19, 2015, he made his debut with Eupen in a match against Eendracht Aalst and scored a goal. In his next match with the club on January 24, 2015, in a game against KRC Mechelen, he went on to assist in three of his side’s five goals.
  7. He played in 9 matches in his first senior season and scored 2 goals.
  8. Akram Afif scored 2 goals in Eupen‘s 4–0 home win against KSV Roeselare on March 18, 2016.
  9. It was confirmed on May 8, 2016, that Afif would be rejoining Villarreal on a permanent deal. With this, he became the first Qatari-born signing in La Liga history.
  10. He was loaned to Sporting de Gijón on August 4, 2016, in a season-long deal.
  11. On August 21, 2016, Akram Afif debuted in the main category of Spanish football as a substitute for Burgui in a 2–1 home win against Athletic Bilbao.
  12. He returned to his first senior club Eupen after 9 league matches on a one-year loan deal on July 14, 2017.
  13. In January 2018, Akram Afif went back to his home country to play for Al Sadd and had a very successful season.
  14. He played a key role in Qatar’s victory in the 2019 AFC Asian Cup campaign as he registered 10 assists overall (a new record in the tournament).
  15. Akram Afif was included in Qatar’s squad for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup.
