Gardner Minshew studied at Brandon High School, a suburban public high school located in Brandon, Mississippi. It was there that he started playing football in 2011 and served as the starting quarterback for the all-freshman team until varsity quarterback Trey Polk broke his arm partway through the season. The following year, he helped take his school to the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) 6A championship game but they lost 31–23 to South Panola. In the title game, Minshew had 223 passing yards and one touchdown. As a senior in 2014, he helped take the school to the MHSAA South State championship. He went on to record 9,705 passing yards, 88 passing touchdowns, a .588 completion percentage, 1,417 rushing yards, 17 rushing touchdowns, and only 24 interceptions in 4 years of high school football and was ranked a three-star recruit by Rivals.com and two stars by 247Sports.com.

After that, Gardner Minshew attended Troy University and matriculated in January 2015. However, he left the university that May before he ever played in a game for the Trojans. He then signed a National Letter of Intent on June 3, 2015, to transfer out of Troy and enroll at Northwest Mississippi Community College, where he would play college football with the Rangers in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). He also attended East Carolina University and Washington State University.

  1. His grandfather wanted him to be named Beowulf (after the Old English hero) but his parents rejected the idea and he was eventually named after his father. He goes by the name “Minshew II” rather than “Minshew Jr.” at his mother’s request because she did not want him to be nicknamed “Junior” or “Bubba”.
  2. Gardner Minshew finished the 2015 season with a 61 percent pass completion rate (223 of 367) and 28 touchdowns.
  3. In the 2019 NFL Draft, he was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the sixth round as the 178th overall.
  4. The Jacksonville Jaguars traded Gardner Minshew to the Philadelphia Eagles on August 28, 2021, in exchange for a conditional sixth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
  5. In 2020, Gardner Minshew made a cameo appearance in the documentary streaming television series Last Chance U.
  6. He signed a one-year, $3.5 million contract (that could go up to $5.5 million with incentives) with the Indianapolis Colts on March 17, 2023.
  7. It was former Jacksonville running back Leonard Fournett who nicknamed him “Jock Strap King” due to Gardner Minshew’s habit of exercising in nothing but the eponymous underwear. Also, the p*rnographic video service CamSoda once offered Minshew a one-million-dollar endorsement deal based on his exercise habit.
