Jessi Combs was an American professional racer who was popularly known as the fastest woman on 4 wheels. Jessi was also a vehicle builder, fabricator, TV personality, and an all-around automotive legend who had set a women’s land speed class record (four wheels) in 2013. Apart from participating in races, Combs was also a regular face on reality TV shows as she hosted more than 90 episodes of Spike TV show Xtreme 4×4 from 2005 to 2009. She was also seen in Overhaulin, Mythbusters, The List: 1001 Car Things To Do Before You Die, All Girls Garage, and How to Build… Everything. All those who knew her received a set back when the news of her untimely death was made public in 2019.

Her fastest land-speed record in a four-wheeled vehicle. She made that record on October 9th, 2013, when she drove the North American Eagle Supersonic Speed Challenger at the Alvord desert. She earned the women’s 4-wheel land speed record with an average run of 398.954 mph (632 km/h) with a top speed of 440.709 mph (709 km/h).

First Film

She made her feature film debut in Interviewing Monsters and Bigfoot in 2019. Unfortunately, Jessi lost her life even before the movie was released. Director Thomas Smugala dedicated the movie to her memory.

  1. She initially wanted to make her career in snowboarding for which she traveled to North America before settling in Denver, Colorado. However, the demanding physical effort made her switch to metal fabrication and racing.
  2. Jessi’s great-grandmother Nina DeBow was a racer too. Jessi was once quoted as saying that her great-grandmother could race anything from Stanley Steemer to Volkswagen Beetles.
  3. Her great-grandmother was a spokesmodel for Goodrich tires.
  4. She was hired by her own college’s marketing department. She and one another student was appointed to make a car right from scratch in 6 months to debut at the Specialty Equipment Marketing Association’s (SEMA) show.
  5. Jessi’s family said that her biggest dream was to become the fastest woman on Earth.
  6. Her jet known as the “North American Eagle Supersonic Speed Challenger” was a 56ft-long, 52,000-horsepower car.
  7. Jessi went on to shatter her own mark of 398.954 mph, topping 483 mph in subsequent follow-up runs. However, those efforts were not considered official because of mechanical issues. Jessi was trying to break the women’s land speed record of 512 mph (823 kph) set in 1976 by Kitty O’Neil.
  8. In 2007, while hosting the show Xtreme 4×4, Jessi met with an accident. The injuries were severe and it took her almost 8 to 9 months to recover. Following the on-set accident, Combs left the show Xtreme 4×4 in 2009. However, her popularity earned her another job in 2009 where she hosted 7 episodes of the 7th season of MythBusters in absence of Kari Byron, who was on maternity leave then.
  9. In 2013, she recorded an AOL Autoblog Show called The List: 1001 Car Things To Do Before You Die. Patrick McIntyre was her co-host and their vlog became an award-winning automotive adventure series.
  10. In 2013, she surpassed the 48-year women’s land speed record of 308.506 mph which was set by Lee Birdlove in 1965.
