Tony Shalhoub Facts

  1. Tony was introduced to the world of acting very young. His older sister put him up to be an extra actor in the high-school production of a play King and I. He ended up being at the wrong side of the curtain at the end, which was a little embarrassing, but that experience inspired him to become an actor.
  2. In the senior year of his Green Bay East High School education, he fell off the stage during a rehearsal and broke a leg. Fortunately, he recovered quickly and performed in the final play.
  3. After he graduated from Yale School of Drama in 1980, he moved to Massachusetts where he spent 4 years with the American Repertory Theater.
  4. Before his Broadway debut in The Odd Couple play in 1985, he waited tables in New York City, New York, USA.
  5. His performance in the play Conversations with My Father was nominated for the Tony Award in the “Best Actor (Featured Role-Play)” category in 1992.
  6. In December 2006, he returned to the Off-Broadway Second Stage Theatre, opposite Patricia Heaton in a play The Scene by Theresa Rebeck. They became good friends after that, and Tony was the best man at her marriage to David Hunt in 1990.

  9. One of his 1st television roles was in the Wings (1991) as a cab driver Antonio Scarpacci, and he was recognized for it even nearly 3 decades later.
  10. In 2002, after an absence of about 2 years, he got the role in the Monk TV series that ran until 2009. He played Adrian Monk, a detective with OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder) that really skyrocketed his career. He was nominated in the “Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series” category for the Emmy Award for 8 consecutive years. He won the Emmy Award in that category in 2003, 2005, and 2006.
