In January 2018, he made his debut for Liverpool FC in an FA Cup third round match against their derby rivals, Everton FC. He scored a header to give his side 2-1 victory.

  1. At the start of his soccer career, he used to work as a dishwasher at the Oncle Jean restaurant in Breda.
  2. He nearly died at the age of 19 after he suffered a burst appendix. He had to spend 12 days in the hospital and it took him 4 months to recover. He also lost 2 stone by the time he was released from the hospital.
  3. In June 2013, he moved to Celtic from Groningen with the Scottish club paying around £2.6 million to the Dutch side. Also, one of the transfer clauses promised Groningen 10% selling-on fee whenever Van Dijk would move to another club.
  4. At the end of his debut season with Celtics, he was one of the three Celtics players to be included in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year. He was again included in the team at the end of the following season.
  5. In September 2015, Southampton paid £13 million in reported transfer fees to Celtics. He also signed a 5 year deal with his new club.
  6. Impressed with his immense performances in his debut season, Southampton offered him a new 6 years contract deal in May 2016. The club also made him the captain in January 2017.
  7. After a transfer saga that lasted for more than half a year, Liverpool finally signed him from Southampton in January 2018. The Merseyside giants paid record-breaking £75 million for the transfer.
  8. His transfer from Southampton to Liverpool made him the most expensive defender in the history of the game.
  9. In March 2018, the new Dutch manager Ronald Koeman made him the captain of the national team.
