G. J. Kinne Facts

  1. His parents are divorced.
  2. As a freshman, G. J. Kinne played as a starting quarterback of the Philadelphia Eagles varsity football team. He played his first game against rival Grand Saline High School. Although his side lost the match, he exhibited a strong arm and good accuracy. Also, he was named “All East Texas” and was named The Tyler Morning Telegraph‘s “East Texas Newcomer of the Year”.
  3. In 2005, his father (who was also his coach at Canton High) was shot in the chest by Jeff Doyal Robertson. Reportedly, Robertson was the father of a player that Gary coached and had often complained to coaches and administrators regarding the way his son was treated. The police reported that Robertson walked into the Canton Fieldhouse and shot Coach Kinne at point-blank range before fleeing in his pickup truck and heading east toward Tyler, Texas. Gary Kinne survived even though he was given only a 10% chance of survival. Subsequently, Robertson was convicted of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
  4. On December 28, 2006, G. J. Kinne committed to the University of Texas while he also received football scholarships from Baylor University, the University of Florida, the University of Nebraska, the University of Oklahoma, and the University of Tennessee.
  5. He transferred to the University of Tulsa in 2008 and became the starting quarterback for the Golden Hurricane in 2009 and remained the starter throughout his career. He went on to finish his career with 9,472 yards and 81 touchdowns.
  6. Kinne was named MVP of the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl in January 2012.
  7. On April 28, 2012, he signed a contract with the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent but was waived by the team on June 28, 2012.
  8. In December 2012, he signed with San Antonio Talons of the Arena Football League.
  9. He signed with the Philadelphia Eagles on February 28, 2013.
  10. G. J. Kinne was signed by the New York Giants on September 9, 2015. After being placed on the practice squad, he was released by the team on September 16, 2015.
  11. On June 13, 2016, he signed with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League (CFL) but was released before he could make his debut.
  12. He was signed by the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the CFL on June 24, 2016, and he made his CFL debut in the final game of the 2016 CFL season, completing 4 of 11 pass attempts for 24 yards.
  13. On May 9, 2017, G. J. Kinne announced his retirement from professional football.
  14. G. J. Kinne was named an offensive assistant coach for the Philadelphia Eagles on February 25, 2019.
