Best Known For

  • Being an important member of the Arsenal senior team squad. After having impressed as one of Arsenal‘s reserve team members, he got an opportunity to join the senior team for the 2015-16 season after he was promoted by the club manager Arsene Wenger.
  • Being an integral member of the Nigerian national team. He is one of the first names on the teamsheet of the national side.

First Soccer Match

In October 2015, he made his professional debut with the Arsenal senior team in the Round of 16 of the League Cup against Sheffield Wednesday. His side crashed out to an embarrassing 3-0 defeat.

In October 2015, Iwobi made his first international appearance for Nigerian national team in a friendly match against DR Congo. He was sent in as Ahmed Musa‘s replacement in the 57th minute. The interesting thing about his international debut is that it came about 3 weeks before his professional debut.

  1. He got his first senior call-up at Arsenal in September 2013 as he was added to the substitutes for a League Cup match against West Bromwich Albion. However, he remained on the substitute bench for the entire match.
  2. Just 4 days after making his professional debut in League Cup, Iwobi made his first Premier League appearance in an away match against Swansea City. With his team already winning by 3-0, he was sent in for Mesut Özil in the stoppage time.
  3. In November 2015, Alex made his first UEFA Champions League appearance in his side’s 5-1 humiliation against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.
  4. At the start of 2016-17 season, he changed his jersey number from 45 to 17 as it had just been left unoccupied because Alexis Sanchez had decided to change his number from 17 to 7, following Tomáš Rosický’s exit.
  5. In January 2018, he drew ire of many Arsenal supporters after it emerged that he was in attendance at a drug-fuelled house party just a day before Gunners‘ humiliating 4-2 defeat to Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup.
  6. After the arrival of new manager Unai Emery in the summer, Iwobi inked a contract extension in August 2018 to extend his stay at the club until 2023.
  7. In October 2017, he scored Nigeria’s only goal in the 1-0 win over Zambia as the Super Eagles sealed qualification for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
  8. In recognition of his great performances at the club and international level, he was recognized as CAF Young Player of the Year in 2016. He was also included in the CAF Team of the Year.
  9. Before he committed himself to Nigerian National Team, he had represented England in the youth tournaments. He was a member of the team that won the Victory Shield in 2011.
  10. At the end of 2016-17 season, he won FA Cup with Arsenal. A couple of months later, he also won FA Community Shield as his side overcame Chelsea on penalties.
