Andrej Kramarić is a Croatian professional soccer player who has represented, as a forward/attacking midfielder, GNK Dinamo Zagreb (2009-2013) and HNK Rijeka (2013-2015) in Croatia; Leicester City F.C. (2015-2016) in England; and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim (2016-Present) in Germany. He also spent loan spells with NK Lokomotiva Zagreb (2012-2013) in Croatia and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim (2016) in Germany. With GNK Dinamo Zagreb, he completed the domestic double of winning the Prva HNL (the top division of the Croatian professional soccer league system) title and the Croatian Cup (the premier domestic knockout soccer competition in Croatia) in the 2010-11 season. These were the club’s record-extending 13th and 11th such titles, respectively. Besides these seasons, he won the Prva HNL in the 2009-10 season as well. With the club, Andrej also won the Croatian Super Cup in 2013. The trophy is annually decided by a one-off match played between the previous season’s winners of the Prva HNL and the Croatian Cup. It was the club’s 5th such title, making them the then-joint most successful team in the competition. With HNK Rijeka, he won the Croatian Cup in the 2013-14 season and the Croatian Super Cup in 2014. The former title was the club’s 3rd such and made it the 3rd most successful team in the competition. Andrej was the highest goalscorer (10 goals) in that tournament. The latter title was the club’s 1st such and made it just the 3rd club to have won this title – after HNK Hajduk Split and GNK Dinamo Zagreb. With Croatia, Andrej finished as the runner-up in the 2018 edition of the FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) World Cup. He was also a key member of the Croatian squad that finished in 3rd place in the 2022 edition of the tournament.

Andrej Kramarić Facts

  1. Andrej’s youth career began in 1997 when, as a 6-year-old, he joined GNK Dinamo Zagreb Academy, the youth system of the Croatian professional soccer club GNK Dinamo Zagreb. He stayed there until 2009 when he was promoted to the club’s senior team.
  2. During his distinguished youth career with GNK Dinamo Zagreb, he scored more than 450 goals. This made him the top goalscorer, at the youth level, in the club’s history.
  3. Andrej was a part of the Croatian squad that reached the semi-final of the 2010 edition of the UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) European Under-19 Football Championship.
  4. At the international level, he represented Croatia at the under-14, under-16, under-17, under-18, under-19, under-20, and under-21 tiers before making his senior national debut in September 2014.
  5. In November 2014, while representing HNK Rijeka, Andrej scored 5 goals against NK Lokomotiva Zagreb, his former club, in a home match that ended in a 6-0 win. In the last 14 years of the Prva HNL, no player had scored more than 4 goals in a match. Only 2 other players had previously scored 5 goals in a match in that league.
  6. In 2014, he won the ‘Prva HNL Player of the Year’ award. He also finished as the Prva HNL‘s top goalscorer (21 goals) in the 2014-15 season.
  7. When rank outsiders Leicester City F.C. won the Premier League (the top tier of the English soccer league system) title for the first time in the 2015-16 season, it was described as one of the greatest sporting fairytales of all time. Andrej was a part of the club’s squad but was ineligible for a winner’s medal as he had played only 2 league games that season (the eligibility for a winner’s medal was a minimum of 5 league games).
  8. In his debut season (2016-17) for TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, he was the club’s top goalscorer scorer with 18 goals to his name across all competitions. This included 15 goals in the Bundesliga (the top tier of the German soccer league system). Andrej was named the club’s ‘Player of the Season’.
  9. In October 2017, after 9 rounds of matches in the group stage (Group I) of the European qualification tournament for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Iceland (19 points), Croatia (17 points), and Ukraine (17 points) were in contention for finishing in the ‘Top 2’ positions in the group. Turkey (14 points) also had an outside chance.
  10. in the 10th and final round, Turkey drew its match against Finland and crashed out with 15 points. Iceland defeated Kosovo to end up with 22 points and finished in the top position in the group and qualified for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. This made the Ukraine-Croatia match a do-or-die affair.
  11. In that match, Andrej scored both goals in a 2-0 win that knocked Ukraine out and helped Croatia finish in the 2nd position (20 points) in the group. Incredibly, he had not scored any other goal previously in this tournament. The 2nd-place finish meant that Croatia advanced to the playoff stage. There, they defeated Greece by a 4-1 margin on aggregate in a 2-legged match and qualified for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Andrej scored the last of those 4 goals.
  12. In the pre-quarterfinal stage of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the match was tied at 1 goal apiece at the end of extra time. Croatia then defeated Denmark by a 3-2 margin in the penalty shootout, with Andrej scoring one of those 3 penalties.
  13. In the quarter-final, against hosts Russia, Andrej scored Croatia’s equalizer in the first half of regulation time. It was his 10th goal in just his 36th appearance in a senior-level international match for Croatia. A 1-1 draw after 90 minutes extended into a 2-2 draw at the end of extra time. Croatia won the penalty shootout by a 4-3 margin.
  14. The result meant that Croatia became just the 2nd team to win 2 penalty shootouts in a single edition of the FIFA World Cup – the first was Argentina in 1990 (against Yugoslavia and Italy). Croatia also qualified for the semi-final of the FIFA World Cup for the first time since 1998. Croatia eventually finished as the runner-up of the 2018 edition of the FIFA World Cup, their best performance ever in the tournament.
  15. Later in 2018, Andrej and the rest of the Croatian squad that finished as the runner-up at the FIFA World Cup were honored with the ‘Order of Duke Branimir’, the 7th most important medal awarded by the Republic of Croatia. The medal is awarded for excellence in promoting Croatia on the international stage and is named after Branimir, a ruler of Croatia who reigned as duke from 879-892 AD.
  16. In March 2019, he became TSG 1899 Hoffenheim‘s all-time top goalscorer (47 goals) in the Bundesliga.
  17. In June 2020, Andrej scored all 4 goals in TSG 1899 Hoffenheim‘s 4-0 away win against Borussia Dortmund, becoming the club’s first player to do so in a Bundesliga match. He also became the first player to have scored 4 goals against Borussia Dortmund in an away game.
  18. In September 2020, in TSG 1899 Hoffenheim‘s first league game of the 2020-21 season, he scored a hat-trick (the feat of scoring 3 goals (not necessarily consecutive) in a match) in a 3-2 win. This meant that Andrej had scored 9 goals in 3 consecutive games (across all competitions) for the club.
  19. He also broke Mario Gómez’s record of 7 goals scored in consecutive Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga (the 2nd-highest tier of the German soccer league system) matches, scoring 8 goals in 4 consecutive league games.
  20. Later that month, Andrej scored 2 goals in a 4-1 win over the then-German and European champions FC Bayern Munich, ending their 32-game undefeated streak and 23-game winning streak across all competitions. It was also FC Bayern Munich‘s first defeat of that calendar year.
  21. In January 2021, he became the Bundesliga‘s all-time top Croatian goalscorer (74 goals). In May 2021, he scored his 19th goal of that season, setting a new record for a TSG 1899 Hoffenheim player.
  22. At the 2022 edition of the FIFA World Cup, Andrej scored Croatia’s 1st and 3rd goals in a 4-1 win over Canada in the team’s 2nd match of the group stage. Sandwiched between goalless draws against Morocco and Belgium, Croatia’s defeat of Canada was instrumental in helping the team finish the group stage in the 2nd position (with 5 points). Croatia eventually reached the semi-final (finishing in 3rd place) of the FIFA World Cup for the 3rd time – after a 3rd-place finish in 1998 and a runner-up finish in 2018.
