Antonio Giovinazzi Facts

  1. He began his competitive racing career with karts, in 2000, at the age of just 7. He won both the Italian National Trophy 60cc and the Euro Trophy 60 championships in 2006. Antonio also triumphed at the WSK Master Series in the KF2 class, in successive years (2010 and 2011).
  2. He competed in the last round of the 2012 season of Formula Abarth and won 2 races out of 3. However, he was not awarded any points as he was only considered a ‘guest driver’ who participated in just one part of the season.
  3. During the 2016 GP2 Series, he won both the feature and the sprint races at the Baku City Circuit and became the first driver since Davide Valsecchi in 2012 to win both those races. It was his first season in the GP2 Series and he missed the overall title by just 8 points. Had he won the championship, he would have been the first rookie driver since Nico Hülkenberg in 2009 to achieve the feat.
  4. Before gaining a full-season competitive F1 spot in 2019 for Alfa Romeo Racing, he had started the first 2 races for Sauber F1 Team in 2017, filling in for an unfit Pascal Wehrlein. He finished 12th in his very first F1 race, the 2017 Australian Grand Prix, and became the first Italian driver to start an F1 race since Jarno Trulli and Vitantonio Liuzzi had competed at the 2011 Brazilian Grand Prix.
  5. When he finished 10th at the 2019 Austrian Grand Prix, it was the first instance of an Italian driver scoring points in an F1 race since Vitantonio Liuzzi’s 6th-place finish at the 2010 Korean Grand Prix.
