  1. When he won an Academy Award in the supporting role category in 2012 for his work in Beginners, he became the first actor to win the prestigious award at the grand age of 82.
  2. Early in his life, he was taking classes to become a concert pianist. But fell in love with theatre and decided to pursue an acting career.
  3. Plummer caught his first big breakthrough after his performance as Mr. Darcy in the high school production of Pride and Prejudice was noticed by noted theatre critic Herbert Whittaker. He cast Plummer in a play performed at Montreal Repertory Theatre.
  4. Although he achieved huge fame for his work in The Sound of Music, he simply hated his role and the movie itself. He has refused to call the movie by the name and instead refers to it as ‘that movie’ and sometimes ‘The Sound of Mucus.’
  5. He holds the distinction of being the first winner of the Genie Awards, which was given out to the best of the Canadian cinema by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television.
  6. In 1968, he was honored with Companion of the Order of Canada, which is considered amongst the highest civilian awards given out by the Canadian government.
  7. He was offered the role of Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings fantasy movie series. However, he decided to turn it down and has regretted his decision ever since.
