Deepti Sharma is an Indian professional cricketer who has represented her country in all 3 formats of the sport (Tests, ODIs, and T20Is), as an all-rounder. She was an integral member of the Indian squads that had reached the final of the 2017 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup and the 2020 ICC Women’s World T20, the second and first times, respectively, that India had made the final of those competitions. She was also a key member of the Indian squad that won the ‘Silver’ medal at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games. It was the first occasion where women’s cricket was included in the Commonwealth Games and just the 2nd time that cricket was included at the Commonwealth Games – a men’s tournament had previously been played at the 1998 edition held in Kuala Lumpur. In the Indian domestic circuit, Deepti has played for her home state of Uttar Pradesh (2014-15–2016-17) and Bengal (2017-18–Present) across all 3 formats. In franchise-based T20 leagues, she has turned out for Trailblazers (2018–2020) and Velocity (2022) in the Women’s T20 Challenge; Sydney Thunder (2021-22–Present) in the WBBL (Women’s Big Bash League); and Western Storm (2019) in the WCSL (Women’s Cricket Super League). She has also played for London Spirit (2021) and Birmingham Phoenix (2022–Present) in The Hundred, a professional franchise 100-ball cricket tournament that was introduced by the ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board) as a new format of cricket that was played for the first time in July and August 2021.

Deepti Sharma Facts

  1. Deepti developed an interest in cricket from a very young age and would often pester her older brother Sumit, a cricketer, to take her to the ground and let her watch some matches.
  2. On one such occasion, during a net practice, she was asked to throw the ball back into play. She threw down the stumps with a direct throw from a distance of about 50 meters. This was noticed by former international cricketer and then India’s national women’s team selector, Hemlata Kala, an event that proved to be a turning point in Deepti’s life.
  3. She started her cricketing journey as a medium pacer but had to shift to spin bowling because of her height.
  4. In May 2017, in a match against Ireland, she recorded a partnership of 320 runs for the first wicket with Poonam Raut. This effort broke the existing opening partnership record in both men’s (286 runs by Sri Lanka) and women’s (229 runs by England) ODI matches. As of September 2022, this remained the record in women’s ODIs.
  5. Deepti scored 188 runs in that match and was named the ‘Player of the Match’ for her performance. This was her maiden ODI hundred and her score of 188 runs was the then record for a maiden WODI hundred. The record was overtaken by Amelia Kerr of New Zealand in June 2018 when she scored her maiden hundred (232 runs not out), also against Ireland.
  6. As of September 2022, Deepti’s knock was the 3rd highest by an opening batter in the history of women’s ODIs. As of September 2022, it was also the highest individual score ever recorded by an Indian player, in any batting position, in women’s ODIs.
  7. She was one of the stars in India’s run to the final of the 2017 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup. She scored 216 runs and picked up 12 wickets in that tournament.
  8. In 2020, the Government of India honored her with the Arjuna Award, the 2nd-highest sporting honor in India.
  9. In February 2023, Deepti was bought for INR 2.6 crore by UP Warriorz in the first-ever Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction in Mumbai.
