Deval Patrick is an American politician, a civil rights lawyer, author, and businessman who is known for becoming the 71st Governor of Massachusetts and serving the office from 2007 to 2015. He was the first African American Governor of Massachusetts who later became a candidate for President of the United States in the 2020 U.S. presidential election.

During his middle school years, Deval Patrick was referred to A Better Chance, a non-profit organization which aims at helping more talented young people of color to become well-educated by providing them the means to attend high-achieving boarding, day, and public schools in the United States, by one of his teachers and that helped him to later study at Milton Academy.

After graduating from Milton Academy in 1974, Deval Patrick got enrolled at Harvard College and graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and American literature in 1978. Then, he attended Harvard Law School and graduated cum laude with a J.D. in 1982. He was also awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws by Harvard University on May 28, 2015.
