Diego Costa played his debut match for Atlético Madrid against Celta de Vigo in the Ciudad de Vigo tournament on August 11, 2007. He came on as a half-time substitute for Portuguese international Simao in a match won by Madrid on penalties.

1. Diego Costa inherited his love for football from his dad Jose de Jesus.
2. Diego is named by his dad after the Argentine great Diego Maradona. Diego’s older brother Jair has been named after the elegant and flamboyant Brazilian winger Jairzinho, who was one of the finest players around in 1970’s.
3. He had a very humble beginning.
4. Diego attributes his “take no prisoner” style of play to his childhood games. His hometown Lagarto didn’t have grass pitches or any organized club football. So more than often, he was playing out on the streets and with kids who were more than two to three years older than him. Those matches played on the streets had no rules or conventional time period. The game ended when everyone was tired and only thing that mattered was who scored more goals.
5. Although he is very close to his older brother Jair, the two siblings had their fair share of tussles while growing up. In an interview given to Dailymail, Diego revealed that the worst thing growing up was to play against his brother. They had to be in the same team otherwise things more than often turned ugly.
