While playing for Atletico, he used to have lots of fresh fish with steamed vegetables. This diet was followed by most of his teammates and was recommended by coach Diego Simeone for low-fat content and great muscle recovery prowess.

Diego Costa Facts

  1. Diego Costa inherited his love for football from his dad Jose de Jesus.
  2. Diego is named by his dad after the Argentine great Diego Maradona. Diego’s older brother Jair has been named after the elegant and flamboyant Brazilian winger Jairzinho, who was one of the finest players around in 1970’s.
  3. He had a very humble beginning.
  4. Diego attributes his “take no prisoner” style of play to his childhood games. His hometown Lagarto didn’t have grass pitches or any organized club football. So more than often, he was playing out on the streets and with kids who were more than two to three years older than him. Those matches played on the streets had no rules or conventional time period. The game ended when everyone was tired and only thing that mattered was who scored more goals.
  5. Although he is very close to his older brother Jair, the two siblings had their fair share of tussles while growing up. In an interview given to Dailymail, Diego revealed that the worst thing growing up was to play against his brother. They had to be in the same team otherwise things more than often turned ugly.
  6. In modern football, where talented players often get snapped up by local academies by the age of 12, Diego wasn’t associated with any academy until 15.
  7. He had moved to Sao Paulo to work with his uncle Jarminho at 15, who had his own store. He used to accompany his uncle to Paraguay, from where they used to bring a truckload of goods to sell at the store. Fortunately, his uncle used his connections to get him signed up with Barcelona Esportiva Capela. He was paid hundred pounds per month at the club.
  8. When he was discovered by the influential Portuguese agent Jorge Mendes, he wasn’t supposed to be playing in the tournament. He was suspended for four months for very typical Diego Costa behavior. He had slapped his rival player in the match and then abused the referee when he was issued a red card for the offense.
  9. His move to Europe with transfer to Portuguese club Braga brought its own challenges for the teenager. Suffering from homesickness, he wanted to return home within a month of joining the new club and he had to be convinced by his father to stay strong.
  10. To say that he has a kind of negative image amongst most rival fans would be a massive understatement and, his over-the-top aggression and antics certainly don’t help his case. However, he is far from the villain he is portrayed as. For example, he has opened a soccer school in his hometown and takes responsibility of all the expenses for it. Almost 200 students are enrolled in it and his childhood friend Junior Menezes helps run the school.
  11. In modern football, special emphasis is placed on body recovery. However, Costa wasn’t too aware of the concept early in his career. While at Spanish club Celta Vigo, he used to play football with his friend at 11 pm on the university ground.
  12. Diego is not a man to mess with and two thieves learned it a hard way. Once while returning from a match, his team bus stopped at a service station and he got down along with his teammates. On returning to the bus, he found two individuals stealing stuff. Diego’s teammates had to sprint after him as he took off after the thieves, shouting profanities in Portuguese and snarling in such a manner that he looked like a madman.
  13. His former loan club Albacete administrator Vicente Ferre de la Rosa revealed that on one occasion, he had a p*rn movie playing at a very high volume. When the neighbor, who was an old woman, asked him to turn the volume down, Diego is reported to have asked her that doesn’t she like making love.
  14. He once killed his Yorkshire terrier accidentally. He was reversing his car when the incident happened. Costa was depressed for almost a month and broke down in front of his Atletico teammate Paulo Assuncao.
  15. Diego has often professed his love for his former club and has claimed that he owes his career to them. And, the way club has looked after him warrants such affection. The club hierarchy made every decision keeping his character and behavior in mind. He was sent on a loan to Celta Vigo instead of Malaga because club director felt he would lose focus in the city known for nightlife. Also, they had people at Celta Vigo that constantly kept his parent club informed about every little thing.
