- After completing his formal education, Donald Pleasence worked as the clerk-in-charge at Swinton railway station. However, he eventually decided to pursue a career in acting and joined the Jersey Repertory Company in 1939.
- He initially refused conscription into the British Armed Forces, registering as a conscientious objector, in December 1939 but later changed his stance in the autumn of 1940 after the attacks upon London by the Luftwaffe. He volunteered with the Royal Air Force and served as an aircraft wireless operator with No. 166 Squadron in Bomber Command.
