Dorothy Tutin Facts

  1. As a child, she was reclusive and self-conscious.
  2. Dorothy Tutin made her first film appearance by playing the role of Cecily Cardew in the 1952 comedy-drama film The Importance of Being Earnest, a film adaptation of the 1895 play by Oscar Wilde. She co-starred in the film along with Michael Redgrave, Michael Denison, Edith Evans, Joan Greenwood, Margaret Rutherford, and Miles Malleson. Also, this performance got Dorothy nominated for a BAFTA Film Award in the “Most Promising Newcomer to Film” category in 1953.
  3. In 1972, she portrayed the character of Sophie Brzeska (a Polish writer and artistic muse most noted for being the companion of the artist Henri Gaudier-Brzeska) in the biographical drama film Savage Messiah. This role earned her a BAFTA Film Award nomination for “Best Actress” in 1973.
  4. Dorothy Tutin was cast as Natalya Petrovna in A Month in the Country for the 1974 season at the Chichester Festival Theatre and this performance won her the Evening Standard Award for “Best Actress” and an Olivier Award for “Best Actress in a Revival”.
  5. For services to drama, she was made a CBE (Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) in the 1967 Queen’s New Year Honours List and was raised to DBE (Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) in 2000.
  6. In an obituary in The Daily Telegraph, Dorothy Tutin was described as “one of the most enchanting, accomplished and intelligent leading ladies on the post-war British stage. With her husky voice, deep brown eyes, wistful smile and sense of humour, she brought an enduring charm to all kinds of stage drama, ancient and modern, as well as to films and television plays in a career that spanned more than 40 years”.
