Dwayne Haskins Facts
- Dwayne, in his final year of high school, had committed to joining the University of Maryland to play college football. However, he had changed his mind at the eleventh hour and joined The Ohio State University because University of Maryland’s football coach Randy Edsall was fired mid-season.
- At The Ohio State University, he had redshirted his first year in 2016. In 2018, his sophomore season and his lone starting season there, he had passed the 4,000-passing yards mark and recorded 50 touchdowns. He had become just one of six NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) quarterbacks to have ever achieved the latter record in a single season.
- For his performances that year, he had won the ‘Chicago Tribune Silver Football’ award, the ‘Graham–George Offensive Player of the Year’ award, the ‘Griese–Brees Quarterback of the Year’ award, the ‘Sammy Baugh Trophy’, and the ‘Kellen Moore Award’.
- He had thrown for 499 yards and 5 touchdowns in the 2018 ‘Big Ten Football Championship Game’, and 3 touchdowns in the 2019 ‘Rose Bowl’. He was named the ‘MVP’ in both those games. Owing to his spectacular performances in the 2018 season, in January 2019, he had announced that we would forgo his remaining 2 years of college football eligibility and enter the 2019 NFL Draft.
- As he had worn the number 7 throughout high school and college, he had requested the Washington Football Team to grant him the same jersey number in the NFL. Although the team had unofficially retired the number 7 jersey in honor of quarterback Joe Theismann, whose career ended with a leg injury in 1985, his request was granted.
- In October 2020, he was fined USD 4,833 for breaking the NFL‘s COVID-19 protocols just one night before a game.
- On April 9, 2022, Dwayne was struck by a dump truck on a South Florida highway and died at around 7 a.m. EDT.
