Fazalhaq Farooqi Facts
- On August 27, 2022, in the opening game of the first stage of the ACC (Asian Cricket Council) Asia Cup, he produced match-best bowling figures (3/11 in 3.4 overs) that helped Afghanistan bundle out Sri Lanka for a paltry total of 105 runs.
- Afghanistan won this match by 8 wickets and Fazalhaq was named the ‘Player of the Match’. This win played a key role in helping Afghanistan finish in the top 2 positions in its 3-team group and qualify for the next (‘Super Four’) stage of the competition.
- In Afghanistan’s 2nd match of the ‘Super Four’ stage, against Pakistan, he again produced match-best bowling figures (3/31 in 3.2 overs). Fazalhaq’s heroic performance, while defending a meager total of 129 runs, fell just short though – as Pakistan eked out a narrow 1-wicket win. This heart-breaking defeat, coupled with a loss in their previous (1st) ‘Super Four’ match, knocked Afghanistan out of the tournament.
- In late December 2022, the Sydney Thunder, a franchise of the BBL (Big Bash League – the premier T20-format cricket tournament in Australia), terminated his contract abruptly. This was after it was alleged that he had harassed female cricketing staff. Cricket Australia (the governing body for the sport in the country) launched an inquiry into the incident following which Sydney Thunder terminated his contract.
- On October 30, 2023, Fazalhaq produced match-best bowling figures (4/34 in 10 overs) in Afghanistan’s 6th match of the league stage of the ICC (International Cricket Council) Cricket World Cup. Afghanistan defeated Sri Lanka by 7 wickets and he was named the ‘Player of the Match’. The 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup, the 13th edition of the tournament, turned out to be a milestone event for Afghan cricket. The team finished in 6th place in the 10-team competition and was, arguably, one big win away from making it to the semi-final stage of the competition.
- They had previously participated in 2 editions of the tournament (2015 and 2019) and won just 1 match out of 15. In 2023 though, they took the world by storm – winning 4 out of their 9 league stage matches – establishing themselves as a force to reckon with in international cricket. This included wins over defending champions England, 1992 champions Pakistan, and 1996 champions Sri Lanka (in the match mentioned above).
