Glenn Maxwell Facts

  1. At primary school, Glenn had to learn how to bat left-handed as no bowler could dismiss him when he batted in his normal right-handed stance. He was even told that he would get banned from playing unless he switched to left-handed batting.
  2. Glenn began his cricketing journey in the Australian junior circuit. He used to be a pace bowler at that time before remodeling his run-up to become an off-break bowler.
  3. He was the most expensive player at the 2013 IPL auctions when the franchise team Mumbai Indians snapped him up for 1 million USD.
  4. For his performances in the 2014 IPL, he was named in ESPN Cricinfo‘s “IPL XI OF 2014”.
  5. For his stellar all-around show at the 2014 ICC World T20, he was named in the ‘Team of the Tournament’ by both ICC and ESPN Cricinfo.
  6. In 2015, he was named in the “ODI XI of the Year” by ESPN Cricinfo. The same year, he was also honored with the “Men’s T20I Player of the Year” award at the Allan Border Medal ceremony by Cricket Australia (CA), a feat that he repeated in 2019. He went on to win the “Men’s ODI Player of the Year” award at the Allan Border Medal ceremony in 2016.
  7. After scoring his first Test century against India on March 16, 2017, he became only the 2nd Australian cricketer, after Shane Watson, to score a century in all 3 formats of international cricket. The same match also became the subject of much controversy when Glenn was indirectly accused in a 2018 documentary by Al Jazeera as a chief suspect in possible match-fixing allegations. He, however, denied and refuted all such claims as baseless.
  8. In October 2019, Glenn announced that he would be taking an indefinite break from the game to tackle his mental health issues. However, he returned to the game in late December to participate in the Big Bash League (BBL), Australia’s franchise-based T20 competition.
