Jeremy Sochan is a Polish-American professional basketball player who has represented the San Antonio Spurs (2022–Present), as a power forward / center, in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was selected 9th overall in the 1st round of the 2022 NBA Draft by the San Antonio Spurs. Between 2020 and 2021, he had turned out for OrangeAcademy, a professional basketball club based in Weißenhorn, Neu-Ulm, Bavaria, that was competing in ProB (the 3rd-tier league of professional club basketball in Germany) at that time. At the youth level, representing Poland, he had won the ‘Gold’ medal at the 2019 FIBA (Fédération Internationale de Basketball Amateur) Under-16 European Championship Division B tournament held in Podgorica, Montenegro. He was also named the tournament’s ‘MVP’ (Most Valuable Player).

  1. His mother was a Polish basketball player who had moved to the United States to study. She met his father in Oklahoma and the couple got married a few months later. Jeremy’s father ultimately abandoned the family after which his mother took him to England where they lived for quite a few years.
  2. Born in Guymon, Oklahoma, United States, Jeremy’s basketball journey began in England, playing for the youth team of Solent Kestrels, an English semi-professional basketball club based in Southampton. He and his mother had later moved to Milton Keynes in Buckinghamshire where he had represented a club called the MK Trojans.
  3. In January 2022, he sprained his ankle during a college game which forced him to miss several matches. Despite this, he was named the ‘Big 12 Sixth Man of the Year’ in 2022 and also included in that year’s ‘Big 12 All-Freshman Team’. As a freshman, he had averaged 9.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game. The Big 12 Conference is a college athletic conference headquartered in Irving, Texas. It consists of 10 full-member universities and is a part of Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for all sports.
  4. He had made his senior national team debut for Poland during the qualification tournament for EuroBasket 2022, the 41st edition of the EuroBasket, the main international basketball competition that is contested quadrennially by the senior men’s national teams that are governed by FIBA Europe. He had become the youngest player to ever play for Poland.
  5. In that game, he scored 18 points, including a 4-point play (3-pointer plus foul and free throw) at the end. He was also involved in a game-deciding block that helped Poland beat Romania 88–81.
