Jharrel Jerome Facts
- It was his mother who had first suggested he pursue acting seriously. This was when he was in 8th grade after which he had joined the Riverdale Children’s Theatre, a local youth organization.
- When he had auditioned for the role of real-life activist Korey Wise in the 2019 Netflix miniseries When They See Us, he had been invited to read lines for the character of Korey’s younger days. However, his audition was so impressive that the showrunners asked him to read for the character of adult Korey as well. He was eventually cast for both roles despite the makers having originally decided to cast different actors to play the 2 roles. During the shooting, he had spent a lot of time with Korey and the two had developed a strong friendship.
- For this performance, he had won the ‘Best Actor in a Movie/Miniseries’ award at the Critics’ Choice Television Awards, the ‘Outstanding Actor in a Television Movie, Limited-Series or Dramatic Special’ award at the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) Image Awards, and the ‘Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie’ award at the Primetime Emmy Awards. He thus became the first Afro-Latino actor to win an Emmy Award for acting.
- In September 2020, he had released a song titled For Real which was his debut as a hip hop artist. He had later revealed in an interview that before the acting bug bit him, it was hip hop that was his real love.
