  1. He was the recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in 1999.
  2. Winters and his close friend Robin Williams ad-libbed most of the dialogue between them on the sitcom, Mork & Mindy.
  3. He struggled with bipolar disorder and spent 8 months in the hospital in 1959 and again in 1961 to receive treatment for bipolar disorder and nervous breakdowns.
  4. Winters took inspiration for his famous drag character Maude Frickert from one of his aunts as well as a character actress named Maudie Prickett, who was also known as Maude Prickett.
  5. His career-defining role as Lennie Pike in Stanley Kramer’s cult classic comedy It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963) almost wouldn’t have happened if not for his wife’s encouragement, as he was just recovering from a nervous breakdown when the offer came to him.
  6. His role model in comedy was Stan Laurel of the Laurel and Hardy comedic duo.
  7. Winters was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6290 Hollywood Blvd in 1960.
  8. He was often mistakenly believed to be related to the actor Shelley Winters. The reason for this confusion was that they both looked similar in build and made appearances in the 1985 film, Alice in Wonderland (1985). Lastly, Shelley’s real surname is Schriftand not Winters.
