Justin Houston studied at Statesboro High School and was a two-time All-Region selection and All-State honorable mention as well as played in three State Championships in 2003, 2004, and 2005.
He then attended the University of Georgia and played college football with the Georgia Bulldogs football team. He was a second-team All-SEC selection after recording 7.5 sacks as a sophomore at the university in 2009. He went on to record 10 sacks as a junior, leading all linebackers in the SEC and was a first-team All-SEC selection and an All-American.

- His high school won the State Championship in 2005 after defeating Northside High School and one of his teammates there was fellow Georgia recruit DeAngelo Tyson.
- Considered a four-star recruit by Rivals.com, he was listed as the #11 weakside defensive end in the class of 2007.
