- During some of his initial childhood years, he lived with his family in the Magnolia public housing project. They later shifted to the Eastover section of New Orleans.
- After Hurricane Katrina caused destruction in New Orleans in 2005, his family relocated to Richmond, Texas.
- Kelly Oubre Jr. played for 3 Milne Boys Home (later known as New Orleans Recreation Development Commission) basketball teams during his time at Edward Hynes Elementary School.
- He was named “Big 12 Newcomer of the Week” twice as a freshman at Kansas Jayhawks in 2014-15. In addition to that, he also received the All-Newcomer Team honors.
- He declared for the NBA draft on April 1, 2015.
