While she was studying in high school, Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović moved to Los Alamos, New Mexico, United States at the age of 17 as a part of a school exchange program. She graduated from Los Alamos High School in 1986.

She then returned to Yugoslavia and got admission in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Zagreb. She graduated from the university with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Spanish languages and literature in 1993.

In 1995, she got enrolled in a Diploma Course at the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna. She completed her diploma in 1996.

In 2000, she got her master’s degree in international relations from the University of Zagreb’s Faculty of Political Science.

From 2002 to 2003, she studied at the George Washington University as a Fulbright scholar. She later studied at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University on a Luksic Fellowship. She has also studied at the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University as a visiting scholar.

In December 2015, she started working on her doctoral studies in international relations at the Zagreb Faculty of Political Science.

1. In 1992, she was appointed as an advisor to the international cooperation department of the Ministry of Science and Technology.
2. In 1993, she became a member of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ). In the same year, she joined the Foreign Ministry as an advisor.
3. After Social Democratic Party of Croatia came to power in 2000, the first step they took was to remove HDZ’s politically appointed staff because of which Kolinda, who was working as a diplomatic counselor at the Croatian embassy in Canada was ordered to return to Croatia.
4. She initially refused to return as she revealed that she was pregnant and had already planned to give birth in Canada. However, after she was pressurized by the Foreign Ministry she relented.
5. In 2003, she was elected as the member of the Croatian parliament from the 7th electoral district as a member of the Croatian Democratic Union. After the government was formed by HDZ, she was appointed as Minister of European integration.
6. As a Minister of European integration, her first task was to start negotiations on Croatia’s ascension to the European Union.
7. In 2005, she was appointed as the Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, which was a newly created position. Her main task was to negotiate Croatia’s entry into the European Union and NATO.
8. In March 2008, she was appointed as the Croatian Ambassador to the United States. She served in that position until her resignation in 2011 as she moved on to become Assistant Secretary General of NATO for Public Diplomacy.
9. She was criticized back in Croatia for having failed to inform Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor in advance about her resignation, because of which, the replacement wasn’t found on time.
10. In 2010, she was caught up in a scandal after it was revealed that Kolinda and her husband had used separate embassy cars for their personal use. She later decided to pay all the expenses incurred for the unauthorized use of the cars.
11. She had noticed an ad for the job with NATO in The Economist magazine. However, she didn’t apply initially for the job. After she learned that they had 2 rounds of interviews and had failed to find a suitable candidate and were conducting another round, she decided to apply.
