Maggie Nichols Facts

  1. In 2013, she was added to the national team to represent the United States at the City of Jesolo Trophy and the Germany-Romania-USA Friendly. At the time, Nichols finished first with her team, 6th in the all-around, and won a silver on the floor exercise. In that same year, she competed at the U.S. Classics where she finished 6th in the all-around, 11th on uneven bars, 8th on balance beam, and 5th on floor exercise. She was also placed 5th in the all-around beam, 6th on bars, and 9th on floor exercise at the National Championships.
  2. During the 2014 National Championships, she finished 3rd in the all-around next to Simone Biles and Kyla Ross. In that same year, she helped the United States finish first at the Pan American Gymnastics Championships held in Mississauga, Canada, and placed 3rd in the all-around with a final score of 55.500. However, she withdrew from the selection camp after she dislocated her kneecap while doing her floor exercise.
  3. Just days following the conclusion of the Olympic Trials on July 13, 2016, Nichols formally announced her retirement from elite gymnastics through an interview and via Instagram.
  4. In 2015, she committed to the Oklahoma Sooners women’s gymnastics team with a full athletic scholarship.
  5. She debuted in the 2016-17 season as a freshman that made an impressive lineup on all 4 events and scored at least one perfect 10 on each. At Week 5, she led the NCAA standings both in all 4 events and the all-around matches. Overall, she completed the season at first place in the all-around. Following her successful debut in the regular season, she went through her major fall on the beam during the 2017 NCAA Championships and missed out on the all-around podium despite being favored to win.
  6. On December 13, 2018, it was announced that she would be receiving the 2019 NCAA Inspiration Award for coming forward as “Athlete A”. She happens to be the first to report former USA Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar to USA Gymnastics while publicly addressing the s*xual abuse she endured. She shared the honor alongside NFL player Shaquem Griffin who played at the UCF despite having only one hand.
  7. In May 2019, it was announced that Nichols would be awarded the Honda Sports Award for gymnastics for 2019, making her the 3rd Sooner to receive the award after softball player Keilani Ricketts and gymnast Kelly Garrison.
