The trophy (founded in 1977 with all 18 Qatari professional soccer clubs competing in a 4-group single round-robin league structure followed by knockout matches), since 2014, has been annually decided by a one-off match that is played between the winners of the Qatar Stars League and the Emir of Qatar Cup. Mohammed Muntari Facts
- Born and raised in Ghana, Mohammed Muntari moved to Qatar in his late teens and eventually became a naturalized citizen of that country.
- He made his senior national debut for Qatar in December 2014 and scored his first senior-level goal for the country in the same match, the opening goal in a 3-0 win in a friendly match against Estonia.
- With Qatar, he finished in 3rd place in the 2021 edition of the FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) Arab Cup, the 10th edition of the Arab Cup, and the first edition under FIFA‘s jurisdiction. The Arab Cup (inaugural edition held in 1963) is contested by the senior men’s national teams of the UAFA (Union of Arab Football Associations), the sport’s governing body for countries in the Arab world.
- At the 2022 edition of the FIFAÂ World Cup, Qatar qualified for the group stage as the host of the tournament. This was the country’s first-ever appearance in the FIFA World Cup. The country lost all 3 of its group-stage matches in the tournament – 0-2 against Ecuador, 1-3 against Senegal, and 0-2 against the Netherlands.
- Mohammed Muntari earned the distinction of scoring Qatar’s first-ever goal at the FIFA World Cup, in the team’s aforementioned 1-3 defeat against Senegal. It remained the team’s only goal in the competition as they crashed out with 0 points to their name. Canada was the only other team in the competition to meet this fate. However, Canada’s goal difference (-5) was slightly better than Qatar’s (-6) which meant that Qatar ended the 32-team competition in the 32nd position.
