Pete Sampras Facts
- At the age of 3, he found a tennis racket in the basement of their home and spent hours hitting balls against the wall.
- He started playing tennis more often at the age of 7 after he and his family moved to Palos Verdes, California, where a warmer climate allowed him to enjoy playing all throughout the year.
- His talent in playing tennis became more recognizable after his family joined the Jack Kramer Club.
- He met and played tennis with his idol, Rod Laver, at the age of 11.
- As a teenager, he trained with coach Robert Lansdorp. The forehand he learned from Lansdorp was the same forehand he had used throughout his tennis career.
- He met Dr. Peter Fischer, a pediatrician and a tennis enthusiast who coach him until 1989. He converted Sampras’s double-handed backhand to single-hand with the hopes of becoming better whilst in preparation for Wimbledon.
- At the age of 16, he turned professional in 1998 and finished the year ranked as world no. 97 after starting the year at no. 893. His first professional match was a defeat to Sammy Giammalva, Jr. at the February Ebel U.S Pro Indoor in Philadelphia. Following his defeat, he came back a week later and defeated 2 top 40 players before he lost to no. 18 Emilio Sánchez.
- In his first Grand Slam singles match, he lost to Jaime Yzaga of Peru in the first round of the U.S. Open.
- In September 1990, he achieved his first Grand Slam title victory at the US Open, defeating sixth-ranked Thomas Muster in the 4th round and third-ranked Ivan Lendl in a five-set quarterfinal, surpassing Lendl’s winning streaks of 8 consecutive US Open finals. Around the same time, he defeated Agassi in straight sets, becoming the US Open’s youngest male singles champion who obtained the title at the age of 19. Sampras finished the year by playing 5 more tournaments and winning the Grand Slam Cup.
- In 1991, he captured the first of his 5 career titles at the year-end Tennis Masters Cup.
- He made his only competitive appearance at the Olympics in 1992 during which the event was played on clay that turned out to be his worst surface. He advanced to the 3rd round before losing to Andrei Cherkasov of Russia.
- In 1994, he won the first 2 Australian titles and defeated American Todd Martin in the final round. Sampras also defended his Wimbledon title later that year.
- In his entire professional career, he has only used one racket type, the Wilson Pro Staff Original, which was first introduced in 1983.
