- Growing up, she played Australian rules football.
- When she was 12 years old, she eventually switched to association football, mostly due to gender restrictions. Sam Kerr has stated, “I started at 12. Before that it was all AFL. I hated soccer when I was a kid. I never had a soccer ball around the house.”
- After she was spotted by Perth Glory striker Bobby Despotovski when Sam was 13, he described her athleticism and raw talent as “exceptional”.
- She went on to make her W-League and international debuts when she was 15 years old.
- As a junior, Sam Kerr played football at Western Knights in Mosman Park. She then trialed for the Western Australian State Team before moving to Perth Glory.
- When she was 15 years old, she debuted for Perth Glory during the 2009 W-League season.
