Samoa Joe Facts

  1. His family founded a Polynesian dance troupe in the United States called Tiare Productions in the past.
  2. At the age of 5, he made his stage debut at the 1984 Summer Olympics opening.
  3. He became a California State Junior Judo Champion and was an all-league football player while attending high school.
  4. Before landing a professional career in wrestling, he worked as a mortgage broker.
  5. He was the first graduate of the UIWA West Coast and trained under Cincinnati Red alongside Johnny Hemp and John Delayo.
  6. In December 1999, he made his debut in a match against “Uncle” Jess Hansen. The match happened 3 months after he started training.
  7. Shortly after signing with former WWF development affiliate Ultimate Pro Wrestling (UPW), he feuded with John Cena and made an appearance on WWF Jakked against Essa Rios. 
  8. On December 12, 2000, he tagged with Mike Knox at the Galaxy Theatre of Santa Ana, California, where he defeated the debuting Al Katrazz with Basil. From there, Samoa eventually won the UPW Heavyweight Championship and later became the longest-reigning UPW Heavyweight Champion in history.
  9. He was once told by Bruce Prichard and Jim Ross that he would not have a future in pro-wrestling.
  10. In June 2001, he went to Japan for Shinya Hashimoto’s Pro Wrestling Zero-One promotion. He continued to work for the promotion all throughout the year 2002 during which he also participated in their biggest shows and tournaments. He formed an alliance with Keiji Sakoda and became the inaugural NWA International Tag Team Champions.
  11. In October 2005, he was signed to 2 Ring of Honors shows when Japanese heavyweight superstar Kenta Kobashi made a once in a lifetime trip to the United States.
  12. On March 4, 2007, he ceased to be a full-time performer in ROH, during which all shows leading to that date were billed as the “Samoa Joe Farewell Tour”. At the time, he defeated longtime rival Homicide.
  13. From 2003 to 2007, he made several appearances for Southern California promotion Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (PWG). On November 15, 2003, he made his debut after defeating CM Punk in a singles match.
  14. Samoa is close friends with fellow wrestlers CM Punk, Homicide, Christopher Daniels, AJ Styles, and Rob Van Dam.
  15. He trains in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, and Muay Thai at LA Boxing in Costa Mesa, California.
  16. He’s a huge fan of video games and admitted on going in a gaming rivalry with Styles. On the side note, Samoa voiced The Beast in the video game “Game of Thrones”.
