Sha’Carri Richardson Facts

  1. In 2016, Sha’Carri had won the 100 m title at the US AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) Junior Olympics, the largest multi-sport event for youth in the United States. The following year, she had won another title at the USA Track & Field Junior Championships.
  2. At the 2017 Pan American Under-20 Athletics Championships, her first appearance at an international event, she had won a ‘Gold’ medal in the 4 × 100-meter relay race event.
  3. She was a finalist in both the 60-meter dash and the 200 m sprint events at the 2019 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships.
  4. She had qualified for the Tokyo Summer Olympics by winning the women’s 100-meter dash with a time of 10.86 seconds in the United States Olympic Trials. In July 2021, it was announced that she had been tested positive for delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) (the main psychoactive component found in cannabis) in a drug test that was conducted before the Olympic Trials. This had invalidated her performance and had made her ineligible to compete in the 100 m event at the Olympics.
  5. She had, subsequently, undergone a counseling program after which she had accepted a month-long period of ineligibility that began from June 28, 2021. She had later revealed that her mother had passed away just a week before her qualifying race for the 2021 Summer Olympics and that she had used marijuana as a means of numbing her pain. This could, most likely, have been the reason behind her positive dope test. After this revelation, several celebrities and pro-marijuana activists had expressed support for Sha’Carri and had vented their frustration on social media against archaic drug and doping codes.
