Tammy Beaumont is an English professional cricketer who has represented her country in all 3 formats of the sport (Tests, ODIs, and T20Is), as an opening batter and occasional wicketkeeper. She had played a starring role in England’s triumph at the 2017 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, the 4th time that England had lifted the title. Tammy had scored a tournament-best 410 runs that had included a mammoth knock of 148 runs against South Africa in the group stage and a team-best score of 49 runs in a narrow 3-run win against arch-rivals Australia in the very next match. 1. She had started playing cricket as a child in Sandwich, a historic town and civil parish in the Dover District where she was born. Her mother had helped her secure a selection in a cricket team for the first time when she was just 8 years old. Soon enough, Tammy was playing along with her brother Michael and their father for the Sandwich Town Second XI.
2. Her cricketing journey came to an abrupt halt in her early teens when she was diagnosed with food allergies that had slowed her growth. She was, consequently, not selected for Kent’s under-11 cricket team. Her mother had then encouraged her to take up gymnastics to develop her muscles. Tammy became so adept at the sport that she went on to become a National Schools Gymnastics champion.
3. She had made a return to cricket in the mid-2000s and had made her debut for Kent in 2007. Later that year, she had been included in England’s developmental squad that had participated in the European Championship.
4. In August 2009, she had scored her maiden domestic hundred against a visiting Surrey side. A month later, she had been added to England’s squad for the team’s tour of the West Indies after regular wicketkeeper Sarah Taylor had withdrawn to focus on her studies. Tammy went on to make her international debut on that tour, in November 2009, in both the ODI and the T20I formats.
5. When the ECB, the governing body for the sport in the country, had announced central contracts for women players in 2014, for the first time in history, she was one among the 18 beneficiaries.
6. During the 2017 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, in a group stage game against South Africa, she and Sarah Taylor had been involved in a partnership of 275 runs. This was the then highest 2nd wicket partnership in the history of the tournament as well as the highest partnership for any wicket in the tournament’s history. 2 games later, against New Zealand, she and Nat Sciver-Brunt had been involved in a partnership of 170 runs. This was the then highest 4th wicket partnership in the history of the tournament.
7. Her ‘Player of the Tournament’ heroics at that event had won her an MBE (Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) in the Queen’s 2018 New Year Honours list. In December 2017, she had been included in the ‘ICC (International Cricket Council) Women’s ODI Team of the Year’.
8. In June 2018, she had scored her first hundred in a WT20I match which was just the 9th such instance in 434 WT20I matches. Tammy’s brutal knock of 116 runs off just 52 balls against South Africa had helped England score 250 runs, a new record for the highest innings total in WT20Is.
9. In June 2019, in the 2nd WODI of that year’s Women’s Ashes series, she had scored 114 runs off 115 balls in a losing effort. This was the first hundred in a WODI match by an England cricketer in the Women’s Ashes.
