- Winifred Westover – Hart co-starred with Winifred Westover in the 1919 silent action film John Petticoats and he came to see her later when she was working in New York City Hart. He escorted her to dinners and shows and when she was about to sign a 5-year film contract with Lewis J. Selznick, Hart sent her a telegram and told her not to sign anything until she’d received a letter he was mailing to her. The letter contained a marriage proposal and she soon telegraphed her acceptance. The duo got married on December 7, 1921, in Los Angeles and the only guests were the bride’s mother, Hart’s sister Mary, and his attorney. Hart and Winifred had an age difference of around 35 years and she signed an agreement to retire from acting on the day of their wedding. She started living with Hart and his invalid sister Mary but just 6 months after the marriage, Hart told his pregnant wife to leave his home. So, Winifred Westover went to live with her mother in Santa Monica and gave birth to William S. Hart, Jr. on September 22, 1922. The duo’s divorce was finalized on February 11, 1927, and she received $100,000 (with the understanding she would not return to acting or have her photograph published) while a trust fund of $100,000 was established for their son to be used for his support and education.
