Robert Donat Facts

  1. He was baptized in Withington, Manchester.
  2. Growing up, Robert suffered from a bad stammer. Hence, having to take elocution lessons with James Bernard. Robert decided to quit school at the age of 15, in order to work as Bernard’s secretary to fund his continued lessons with him.
  3. Robert made his debut public appearance as an actor at the age of 16, in 1921, with Henry Baynton’s company at the Prince of Wales Theatre, Birmingham, portraying the character of Lucius in Julius Caesar.
  4. He was cast in his first film titled Men of Tomorrow in 1932.
  5. Robert was cast in his first and only Hollywood film called The Count of Monte Cristo in 1934. Though, Robert was considered for the lead role in two other films including Anthony Adverse (1935) and Captain Blood (1935), but decided to deny the roles as he did not like his time in America.
  6. Robert sadly passed away at West End Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in Soho, London, on June 9, 1958, at the age of 53.
  7. According to his biographer Kenneth Barrow, he had a brain tumor the size of a duck egg. He was cremated in Marylebone three days after his death. After his death, he left behind an estate worth £25,236.
  8. He was assigned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6420 Hollywood Blvd.
