Best Known For
Playing Darrell Rivers in Malory Towers, the boarding-school drama adapted from Enid Blyton’s postwar novels, which premiered on CBBC and BBC iPlayer in 2020 and returned for multiple series. The show follows Darrell from her nervous first term through her years at the Cornish clifftop school, and Bright carries most of its emotional weight — including Darrell’s famous temper, which Blyton wrote as the character’s defining flaw.
First TV Show
Malory Towers gave Bright her first substantial television role, and it came with the pressure of a title-adjacent lead. She was cast from a large open search for young actresses who could handle a 1940s register without sounding stiff.
Ella Bright’s Facts
She was cast as Darrell Rivers while still a young teenager and has effectively grown up alongside the character across several series.
Enid Blyton’s original Malory Towers books were published between 1946 and 1951, so the scripts required her to pick up period-appropriate speech patterns and posture.
The BBC/WildBrain co-production was made with an almost entirely female principal cast — unusual for a children’s drama of that scale.
Darrell’s hot temper is the role’s trickiest element; Bright has said in interviews that the outbursts are the scenes she enjoys playing most, since the character is otherwise so well-behaved.
Lacrosse features heavily in the series, and the young cast had to be trained in the sport for filming.
She keeps a notably low social media footprint for an actress with a lead role in a popular children’s series.
The show found a second audience internationally through streaming, where adult viewers who’d read the books as children made up a sizeable chunk of its following.
