Alan Cumming Facts

1. In his autobiography titled Not My Father’s Son (2014), Alan had revealed that he had endured a difficult childhood due to the emotional and physical violence that his father used to inflict on him. His mother had wanted to obtain a divorce due to this but could not do so as she was financially dependent on him.
2. He became estranged from his father in his early 20s and did not have any contact with him until 2010 when his father claimed that he believed that he was not his biological son. Alan and his brother then underwent DNA tests that proved they were indeed his biological children.
3. In March 2005, he was honored with the ‘Vito Russo Award’ at the 16th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in recognition of his staunch stand against homophobia.
4. In November 2006, the University of Abertay Dundee had conferred upon him an honorary Doctor of Arts degree.
5. During the 2009 Queen’s Birthday Honours, he was appointed an ‘Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire’ for his services to film, theatre, arts, and his activism for LGBT rights. In January 2023, Alan revealed that he had returned his Officer of the British Empire (OBE) award because he no longer wanted to be associated with the “toxicity” of the British Empire.
