Chanda Kochhar studied at St. Angela Sophia School in Jaipur, Rajasthan. Afterward, she shifted to Mumbai and got enrolled at Jai Hind College. Subsequently, she graduated with a bachelor of commerce degree from the University of Mumbai.

- She joined the Industrial Credit and Investment Corporation of India (ICICI) as a management trainee in 1984.
- She handled project appraisal and monitoring as well as evaluated projects in industries such as textile, paper, and cement during her initial year at ICICI.
- During the 1990s, Chanda Kochhar became an important figure in the establishment of ICICI Bank and was appointed as one of the core team members in 1993. The following year, she was promoted to assistant general manager (AGM).
- She started serving as the deputy general manager (DGM) of ICICI Bank in 1996. She also headed the newly formed Infrastructure Industry Group of ICICI Bank in 1996.
